Stop Defeating Yourself: Overcoming the Fear of Success
Have you ever been on the verge of doing something — applying for a job, starting a new venture, or even approaching someone you admire — only to be paralyzed by anxiety? That overwhelming wave of “What if this goes wrong? What if I embarrass myself? What if I fail and everyone sees?”
We spend so much time trapped in our heads, creating countless negative scenarios before anything even happens. The fear of failure, rejection, or disappointment convinces us to retreat before we ever take the first step. But in reality, nothing bad has actually happened — except that we’ve talked ourselves out of success.
Are You Running from Success?
One of the biggest mental traps we fall into is avoiding challenges out of fear. But here’s something to think about: If we keep running away from success, how is success ever supposed to catch up to us? It’s like playing a game of hide-and-seek where we don’t allow ourselves to be found.
That job you never applied for, that business idea you never started, that person you never spoke to — all of those opportunities remain lost simply because you convinced yourself you weren’t good enough. And in that moment, you’re not losing because you failed; you’re losing because you never even tried.
The Illusion of Winning by Avoiding
Many people believe that by avoiding something potentially embarrassing, they’ve won. “If I don’t try, I won’t fail.” But in reality, you’ve already lost. There’s no shame in trying. Failure isn’t the opposite of success — it’s a stepping stone to success.
Every attempt teaches you something. Maybe you weren’t as prepared as you thought, maybe your approach could be improved, or maybe you need to develop a new skill. But those are all things you can fix. What you can’t fix is a missed opportunity that you never pursued in the first place.
We Suffer More in Our Minds Than in Reality
There’s a quote that says, “We suffer more in imagination than in reality.” This couldn’t be more accurate. The mental anguish we put ourselves through — the self-doubt, the overthinking, the negative what-ifs — often creates more pain than the actual experience ever would.
Think about a time when you were terrified of doing something, only to realize afterward that it wasn’t as bad as you thought. When I applied to dental school, I constantly worried about rejection. “What if I don’t get in? What if I bomb the interview?” But once I actually got in, I realized I had been stressing over a worst-case scenario that never even happened. If I had let fear stop me, I never would have discovered what I was truly capable of.
Everything Is Difficult — So Choose Your Hard
Trying something new is difficult. You might feel nervous, uncertain, or unqualified. But not trying is difficult too. The regret of wondering “What if I had tried?” can linger for years.
So, if both paths come with challenges, why not choose the one that leads to potential success? Growth only happens when we step outside our comfort zones. And even if things don’t go perfectly the first time, you’ll be further ahead than if you had never tried at all.
Progress Over Perfection
When I started recording YouTube videos, I used to get in my head about it. “What if people judge me? What if I sound awkward?” But I realized something important: You don’t have to be perfect to start, but you have to start to get better.
No one becomes great overnight. Even professional athletes, musicians, and speakers didn’t start as experts. They put in the reps, they made mistakes, and they improved over time. The same principle applies to everything in life — whether it’s starting a business, applying for a new job, or learning a new skill. The more you do it, the more natural it becomes.
Stop Overthinking and Start Taking Action
We tend to overcomplicate things in our heads, setting impossible standards before we even begin. But success isn’t about being flawless — it’s about starting. It’s about taking that first step, even when it’s scary, and trusting that you’ll figure it out along the way.
If you’ve been holding yourself back from something, let this be your sign to go for it. Because the real failure isn’t falling short — it’s never giving yourself the chance to succeed in the first place.
So, what’s the thing you’ve been avoiding? What’s the step you know you need to take? Whatever it is, do it. Your future self will thank you.
