Every Day Is a Blessing — If You Let It Be
Life is full of blessings, but whether we recognize them depends on our mindset. I was reminded of this recently while listening to “Crazy” by Forrest Frank (featuring Nick D). The song talks about how every day is a blessing — if we allow it to be. That got me thinking: Why do so many of us wake up in a negative headspace?
Why We Start Our Days Off Wrong
For many people, the day begins with stress. Maybe you wake up already dreading work, thinking about that job you don’t love or the co-worker who gets on your nerves. Others wake up to financial anxiety, immediately feeling the pressure of not making as much money as they wish.
And then there’s social media. How many people start their day scrolling through Instagram or TikTok, seeing influencers and celebrities flaunting their luxurious lifestyles? The yachts, private jets, designer bags, and multi-million-dollar homes — it all sends the same message: You’re not enough unless you have this.
Then, the cycle continues. You get in your car, drive to work in traffic, and listen to music that only reinforces these thoughts. Maybe it’s a rap song glorifying wealth or a lifestyle you don’t live. Before you know it, your mind is consumed with the idea that happiness comes from financial success. You think, “If only I had more money, I’d be happier than I’ve ever been.”
Chasing More vs. Finding Fulfillment
I know this struggle firsthand. When I was younger, I used to think happiness was tied to material things. I told myself, “If I had a basketball court in my house, I’d be happy. If I had a gym at home, I’d be happy. If I had multiple cars and 50 or 60 pairs of shoes, I’d be happy.”
But as I started to accumulate things, I noticed something: I wasn’t any happier. The more I got, the less I valued each new item.
Take sneakers, for example. If you buy a new pair of shoes every few months, you appreciate them. But if you’re constantly buying new pairs, the excitement fades quickly. Soon, you’re not enjoying the shoes you already own because you’re too focused on the next pair.
It’s the same with cars, homes, or any material possession. When you’re always chasing more, you’re never satisfied. There’s always something else to buy, something else to achieve, something else to want. And before you know it, you’re stuck in a cycle where you believe the next thing will finally make you happy.
Breaking Free From the Cycle
At one point, I went through this with Yeezys. I loved their design and wanted at least one pair from every model — 350s, 700s, 500s, Foam Runners, Yeezy Slides, Knit Runners — you name it. But as my collection grew, I realized something: I was neglecting the shoes I already loved.
Instead of enjoying what I had, I kept looking for the next pair. I reached a point where I thought, “maybe I should sell some of these and actually appreciate what I own instead of constantly looking for more.”
True Peace Comes From God, Not Things
This morning, I woke up and did something different. Instead of thinking about what I don’t have, I prayed. I spent time with God. I read the Bible.
And that changed everything.
When I focus on God, I realize I don’t need to keep acquiring things to feel whole — because He makes me whole. Spending time with Him brings a peace that money, success, and possessions never can.
If you’re feeling stuck in the mindset of “I need more to be happy”, I encourage you to pause. Take a step back. Spend time with God. Reflect on the blessings you already have. Because every day is a blessing — if you let it be.
