Second Nature by Clairo: A Nostalgic and Chill Experience
Clairo’s album Charm has some incredible songs, but one that stands out the most for me and my wife is Second Nature. It’s easily our favorite track from the album, and every time we listen to it, it brings back so many great memories.
A Funny Misheard Lyric
One of the funniest things about this song for me is in the first part when Clairo sings, “My train of thought destroyed.” For the longest time, I thought she was saying “trade of thought” instead. It wasn’t until my wife and I were dating that I said it in conversation, and she burst out laughing. She was like, “You mean train of thought?” And that moment stuck with me ever since. So now, every time I hear that line, I can’t help but think about that funny realization.
Honestly, am I the only one who thought it was “trade of thought” at some point? Let me know if you ever misheard that phrase too!
Discovering the Meaning of “Kismet”
Another part of the song that really stood out to me was when Clairo sings, “And once you get in my ear, I see Kismet sinking in.” When I first heard that, I had no idea what “kismet” meant. So, naturally, I looked it up and found out it means “fate” or “destiny”. That made the lyrics even more beautiful, adding to the idea of a deep, almost predestined connection with someone.
The Feeling of Knowing Someone Forever
Following that line, she sings, “And when I tell you, it’s because I’ve known you well before, my train of thought destroyed.” This part really resonated with me because it perfectly captures that feeling of falling in love and feeling like you’ve known the person forever. I remember when my wife and I went on our first date — it felt so natural and effortless, like we had already known each other for years. This song really brings back that feeling.
The Beat Switch and Unique Instrumentation
Another part that I love is when she sings, “Rolling down to be near her, it’s second nature.” The beat switch at that moment is so smooth and just elevates the song even more. And then towards the end, there’s this deep, rich-sounding instrument that I think is a bassoon. I played the bassoon for a little bit in high school, so hearing it in the song immediately took me back to those days — sitting in band class, holding the instrument just right, and learning how to play it. It’s such a unique and unexpected addition to the track, and I love it.
The Perfect Chill Album
Overall, the instrumentation and production on Charm are just top-tier. It’s such a soothing and laid-back album — perfect for nighttime listening or unwinding after a long day. Whether you’re driving, relaxing at home, or just need something chill to vibe to, this album is an easy go-to.
